5 Tips on Choosing A Wedding Photographer

It’s so exciting and stressful to plan your wedding. If you’re planning a destination wedding in another state, it can be overwhelming because you’re not familiar with your destination’s wedding vendors. If you’re planning to have your wedding in Hawai`i, there’s a lot to consider. We talked to some premiere Hawai`i photographers from Michele Coehlo Photography, Esser Photography, and Jenna Lee Pictures and came up with 5 tips on choosing a wedding photographer.

Before sharing the Top 5, it’s important to note a few things.

The photographers we interviewed had over 13 years of experience, which is critical to ensure they know what they’re doing and have fine-tuned their craft.

Secondly, they all love what they do. It gives the photographers great joy to connect and capture one of most important days of a couple’s history through their unique artistic perspective and adds an element to the whole wedding experience. Documenting memories through photography brings joy and fulfillment to both photographer and couple.

Finally, here are the TOP 5 TIPS ON SELECTING A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER:

  1. All of our photographers recommend you interview your potential photographer to ensure you’re working with an experienced photographer with years of experience, confirm you’re on the same page and their style matches your desired wedding outcome.

  2. Communication is extremely important to learn how your photographer will execute your wedding shoot and convey what you want to capture. Do some research and compile a list of questions (even the hard ones) to ask your photographer.

  3. Consider doing an engagement session with your potential wedding photographer because engagement shoots are one of the best ways to get to know your photographer and their shooting style. It will also provide great material for your wedding.

  4. Ask to view an entire wedding gallery to review photo image quality, what story the photos are telling, see if the photos captured key moments, and if the types of images are important to your story.

  5. Create a list of photos of the family and groups of family member and designate someone to be responsible to ensure these photos are taken. If having those types of photos included, think of who will be in them ahead of time so you don’t have regrets later.

The photographers we interviewed are stellar professionals with more than 5 tips, so here are some additional thoughts when selecting your wedding photographer:

Unplug from devices to eliminate unwanted texts, phone calls in the middle of photo shoots with photos of the bridal party on their cell phone!

  • Consider that quality wedding photos that tells a story is an investment, so don’t skimp! Remember--this is the one shot at capturing this special moment with your special person.

  • Be sure to inquire how long it will take before you get to see a sneak peek and your entire wedding gallery photos following the wedding event and confirm whether or not you’ll get printing rights.

  • Confirm whether or not there are additional fees, so you won’t be surprised later.

Choosing a wedding photographer is no easy assignment, so be sure you vet your photographer to assure your special moments will be captured the way you want.
